The Story

Tom Burke and Helen Whytock know how to turn a lawn or open field into an elegant and inviting space for an outdoor affair that isn’t really out of doors—although there’s nothing like bringing some natural surroundings inside to add to the ambience.

Utilizing leading edge technology and contemporary design, Burke’s Tent Rentals make a special occasion a splendid experience.

Jan_huron_east-0604

Whether formal or informal, the atmosphere created by Burke’s pristine structures is important to whatever is happening within them.  Accessories like beautifully draped ceiling liners and dramatic colour washing transform any setting.  And for something truly remarkable, their clear span tent can create an amazing space with no centre poles.

Alternatively, if a professionally assembled business or show arrangement is what you need, Burke’s has the answer.  In addition, a building interior that is functional but bare-bones can be converted into something warm and welcoming with perimeter drapes ceiling to floor.

Engineered and designed to withstand weather, Burke’s tents are available in a wide variety of sizes and configurations.  Chairs, tables, windowed sidewalls, dance floors, lighting and heat are all part of the package that Burke’s can put together.  And with their connections to talented local decorators, interior design and décor are made easy.

Whether for 50 or 500, weddings, lawn parties, corporate functions, festivals and fairs are just some of the specialities that Burke’s Tent Rentals undertake—all with flair and fastidious attention to detail.  For an event like no other, call Burke’s.

Jim and Lois Lee

The Story

A café has long been on Jim Lee’s “to do” list.  With the raison d’etre of good food, good friends and good music, he and Lois launched Cinnamon Jim’s Café in 2006, setting up in their newly renovated flatiron building dating from 1891.

Dsc_0072

Cinnamon Jim’s is more than just a pretty face—and more than a great sandwich.  The menu has expanded to include hot sandwiches, light lunches, wonderful homemade soups, and delicious Friday night dinners.  And their cinnamon buns are fabulous—the result of testing dozens of recipes to produce one that’s perfect.  Cookies, squares and sweet treats taste just like what your Grandma used to bake.

Dsc_1314

Jim is a hands-on owner and agrees with the old Polish saying that “the eye of the farmer makes the pig grow fat”.  To that end, he has his eye on the business and his ear to ground—when he’s not in the kitchen.

On the second level, The Upper Deck is an offsite meeting space or banquet room.  It is also the venue for Jim’s rollicking Open Mike evenings where musicians, local and otherwise, sing and play for appreciative audiences.

Dsc_1310

Take out or eat in, Cinnamon Jim’s lives up to its advertising.  Fun and great food are a wonderful combination.

Dwain and Sherri Forrest

The Story

As a Cub Scout, Dwain Forrest was introduced to canoeing—and it was love at first float.  Building a cedar strip with his Scout troop at age 14 further cemented that relationship.  Today with the capable assistance of wife, Sherri, Dwain owns and operates Timber’s Outfitters—supplier of everything needed for successful outward-bound trips.

Slide

From canoes and kayaks to tents and campstoves, Timber’s carries a complete line of equipment and supplies.  Whether you’re camping or paddling—or both—Dwain’s store has it all, including rental of canoes and kayaks.  And his major suppliers and manufacturers are quality Canadian companies.

Floating along a river or stream gets you up close and personal with flora and fauna—ducks, geese, muskrat, beaver and deer share space with you.  Foliage flourishes and flowers along a quiet waterway.  If you travel it often enough, you could see nesting waterfowl become families with fluffy babies trying the water for the first time.  And on that winter day when you’d like to try something different, at Timber’s you could rent or purchase snowshoes for a winter wonderland hike.

Maitland_river_brussels

Brussels beautiful millpond at Logan’s Mill, within the Maitland Valley Conservation area, is the location of special summer events staged by Timber’s Outfitters.  Their Water Days offer the chance to try kayaking in a secure and fun setting.  Dwain brings the kayaks and two safety boats—instruction is two on one, ensuring an “in dry” and “out dry” experience.  Wet clothes aren’t part of Water Days.  Check out Timber’s website for dates and times. www.timbersoutfitters.com or visit www.shopseaforth.ca Timber's Outfitters is No. 214 on Directory/Map.

Before you head for the great outdoors, see Dwain Forrest at Timber’s Outfitters for tips on the best water in the area, as well as knowledgeable advice on the latest in water craft and outdoor gear.  Timber’s is all about personal service and quality merchandise.

Check out this video for insight into some beautiful waterways within Huron County, including helpful paddling tips. Soon to be released is a comprehensive paddling guide sponsored by the Huron County Tourism Department. Special thanks to Dwain Forrest and Janice Andrews, from the Municipality of Huron East, both avid paddlers, for their contribution to this county publication. Expected launch date Spring of 2012.

ROBERT TETU – BIOGRAPHY

Robert Tetu, born in Cambridge (Preston) Ontario, is a professional potter with an established artistic reputation.  He attended the Ontario College of Art, but left midway through his second year out of frustration with the academic regimen of the time. After studying pottery part time in Toronto, he established Beechwood Pottery in an historic old general store near Seaforth, Ontario in 1975.

Although Robert continues to produce a line of functional stoneware pottery, he is presently concentrating his efforts on work inspired by the delicate yet robust forms of Oriental ceramics (Yuan, Sung and Ming Dynasties, and Korean folk pottery). The pieces range from delicate celadon glazed porcelain to smoky organic forms finished with unpredictable shino glazes and melted wood ash. Fired to almost 1300 degrees C, the work has an almost diabolical tendency to self-destruct at any step in the creative process, but he enjoys the challenge of pushing the material to its limits. The work varies in size from tiny, delicate liqueur glasses to tall vases and large, wide bowls.  Functional or decorative, each piece reflects uncompromising craftsmanship and quality.

Robert has presented major workshops in ceramics to several Ontario potters' groups including those at Stratford, Windsor, Brantford, London, Thunder Bay, Hamilton, Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto.  FUSION: the Ontario Clay and Glass Association, commissioned him to present a technique/marketing workshop for Ontario potters and ceramic students at Sheridan College and he has been an instructor at Canadore College Summer School of the Arts in North Bay, Ontario. After serving on the Board and as President of FUSION: the Ontario Clay and Glass Association, in 2001 he was honoured with a life membership. In 2004 he was similarly honoured by the Ontario Crafts Council  with the John Mather Award for exemplary service to craft.

Besides being a sought-after exhibition juror and programme speaker, he has been represented in many juried and invitational exhibitions.  He has won many awards, including three Ontario Crafts Council Design Awards, for his work and has been featured in a number of solo shows at galleries across the province.  His pottery is included in a number of private and public art collections, notably, the Governments of Ontario and Brazil, and the permanent collections of the Potters' Guild of Hamilton and Region, the Burlington Arts Centre, the Waterloo Potters' Studio, and The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery. Currently he has an on-going commission from the Royal Ontario Museum to create detailed replicas of oriental porcelains for their Reproductions Shop.

He accepts the challenge of individual commissioned works, specializing in custom dinner services in both stoneware and porcelain, and is renowned for his liturgical pieces.  The studio is open by chance or by appointment, and the artist holds two major shows a year at his studio, a June Spring Show featuring new works, and a Christmas Show and Sale in November.

The Story

A walk in an Australian forest and a beautiful Rosella Parrat proved to be the catalyst that led to something something striking and unique - Rosella Resin bracelets and rings, the creations of two talented sisters, Jessica and Gwynne Burgess.

The translucence and lustre of their jewellery invite touching, running fingers and hands over them, in the hope of learning secrets - for stories and secrets they have.

Embedded in each one-of-a-kind bangle or ring is an exquisite element of nature, carefully and artfully preserved, to be enjoyed forever.  Whether shells, wheat, dried flowers or their signature parrat feathers are encased, whether highly polished and faceted or with a soft patina, Rosella products are ready-to-wear art.

And the Burgess sisters are conscious of producing eco-friendly merchandise with minimal carbon footprint.  Every feather is from natural molting and the eco-resin they use comes from non-petroleum, bio-renewable materials.  For that ideal gift, there is nothing as exceptional as one that is custom designed—especially a keepsake that includes a special memento or symbol, suspended in its own see-through sea.
